Long Notes Practice
Now that you've practiced making a sound and using your tongue to start the notes, let's try playing some long notes together.
Posture Check
- Standing or sitting up straight
- Shoulders relaxed
- Your posture is really important
Preparing to Play

Hold the Trumpet: Bring your trumpet up in front of you.

Breathing:
- Before we blow, take a breath.
- Make sure you're not breathing through your nose; breathe through the sides of your mouth.
- Don't think about it too much.

Mouthpiece Position:
- Place the mouthpiece on your lips and breathe in.
Long Note Exercise
Let's play a long note together. We're going to play our lower notes, so relax those lips. I'll count to four, and we play together.

Count:
- One, two, three, and stop.

Repeat:
- Let's do that one more time.

Breath Timing:
- As I say "three," you breathe in so you're ready to blow.
- Get that tongue ready to push the note through.
Note Specifics
- Ready?
- Count: 1, 2, 3.
I'm playing the note C. You might find you're getting more easily a note G. That's fine!
- G sounds like this: (demonstrate G).
- I'll play a couple of long notes on G. Everyone join in: 1, 2, 3.
Note Variations
- If you're getting the G, it means your lips are a little bit tighter.
- If you're getting the C, your lips are more relaxed.
Experimentation
Try experimenting with both notes. See if you can move between the two.
- Let's do two long notes on C and two long notes on G.
- Don't forget to breathe in.
- Ready? 1, 2, 3.

About the instructor
Kay est trompettiste, compositrice et professeure de cuivres et de musique scolaire, spécialisée dans l'enseignement en classe au primaire - KS2, First Access/WCET (enseignement en ensemble pour toute la classe, où une classe entière apprend un instrument ensemble) et CPD des enseignants (développement professionnel continu). Elle a obtenu en 2018 un master en éducation musicale - 'Teaching Musician' au Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Kay joue de la trompette au sein du Bollywood Brass Band, une formation de 9 musiciens de cuivres et de percussions dont le CD de 2017 Carnatic Connection a été nommé à un 'World Music Award' du magazine Songlines et a reçu une critique 5 étoiles dans le London Evening Standard. Kay compose et arrange pour le groupe et dirige son travail pédagogique, ayant fondé la Bollywood Brass Academy en 2017. Kay a présenté ses recherches sur l'enseignement à toute la classe au Music Education Expo et au First Access Forum. Elle a conçu et animé des CPD pour LSO Discovery, Trinity College London, Music Education Solutions et le Bollywood Brass Band, et elle est consultante en éducation pour Warwick Music.
