Creative Effects in Logic

I've got some creative effects going on here. This is a bass that has been greatly modified.

Step Effects

  • The Step Effects is a new plugin in Logic.
  • It essentially operates as a step modulator, using a sequencer to modulate different parameters of your sequence and various effects:
    • Filter
    • Distortion
    • Reverb
    • Delay
    • Modulation Effect (Feedback)

LFO Modulation

For example, my filter is being modulated by the LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator) and it's running the step modulator. Let's put this in LFO mode:

  • Right now, with playback, the filter is off, it's not moving.
  • When activated, the LFO controls the filter's depth and rate.

MIDI Modulator

  • You might notice an envelope in the delay, this is being modulated by a MIDI modulator.
  • As we discussed with the MIDI effects before, this MIDI modulator affects the step effects, specifically the delay feedback.

"Just a cool alternative to giving it a bit of a sound, a bit of something unique."

Although I don't think I ended up using this bass for the track itself, it was an interesting experiment.

Fat Effects

Another effect in use is the Fat Effects, which is also a new addition in Logic.

  • It looks pretty similar to the Step Effects but has various different functionalities.
  • This modulator operates similarly, using LFO1 and LFO2 to modulate different sounds.

Both the Step Effects and Fat Effects, as well as Alchemy, are tools that were ported over from a company called Camel Audio. Apple acquired them a few years ago, and Logic has revamped these plugins into their own.

These tools are incredibly handy and serve as very good creative tools!
