Playing Technique

Let's discuss a few specifics based on how I performed it.

Counting

Always preempt the beginning of your drum part with a count. It's something I still do every time I play.

• In this instance, we've essentially got this eighth note feel.
• The basic count is roughly:
  • 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4.
  • 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.

This will set you up for a bass drum to hi-hat introduction.

• It's common to drag or push a bit when the bars are quite empty.
• This count helps set everything up in your mind.

Groove and Dynamics

As I said, the groove is laid-back and light:

• Keep the volume down.
• Imagine people dancing at a barn dance, enjoying a hoedown.

Key Points:

• Avoid scaring the dancers or the congregation!
• Listen to the backing track and stay in sync with it.

When tapping out the groove:

• Pay attention to the balance of sound. We want a very regular mix.
• Nothing should jump out too loudly; everything should be balanced.

In my performance, I added some dynamics to the hi-hat.

• I played on the tip of the stick on the top of the hat.
• This created a more relaxed feel than a monotone approach, but it's fine to play it that way too.

Unison Beats

Be cautious with the unisons.

• You've got set parts where we might play something like two bass drums and two snare beats.
• Be careful not to "flam" it.

Just keep it as tight as you can!

Practice Recommendations

To help with Hoedown in general:

• Listen to the track and play along.
• Use a metronome for practice.
• Try playing both with and without the click track.
