Piano Learning: Sharing the Experience

Everything we've covered in this film so far has been about you at the piano by yourself. This is often the experience of us pianists. While we occasionally play as duets, very often we're at the keyboard alone.

The Solo Experience

  • Fact of Life: You may not know anyone nearby who is also a piano learner and pianist. It's common to find yourself practicing solo.
  • Exciting Techniques: The techniques we've discussed in this film are designed to give you engaging activities at the piano to fast track your learning.

The Joy of Shared Experiences

Having said that, you might want the piano experience to be a shared one. Fortunately, every technique we've talked about can be done with another person, whether:

  • Two People at One Keyboard: You can explore various techniques together.
  • Using Two Pianos: If you're lucky enough to have access to two pianos, you can implement these techniques even more effectively.

Techniques to Explore Together

Consider these collaborative ideas:

  • Pulse and Note Pattern: One player can give the pulse while the other develops the note pattern or phrase over that. Then, switch roles!
  • Layered Chords: Two pianists can engage in playing layered chords together.
  • Musical Conversations: Instead of a conversation between two hands, it can become a dialogue between one player's right hand and the other player's left hand, at one keyboard or two.

Overcoming Challenges

If you're at your piano thinking, "This is great, but I'm struggling with coordination between my hands," you're not alone.

  • Common Frustration: Many learners find coordination tricky, and some don't know anyone nearby to practice with.
  • No Need to Worry: This scenario is very common, and there are solutions.

Backing Tracks for Learning

As part of this film, we will provide some backing tracks that explore different styles we've discussed.

  • Play Along: These tracks can be used to play along with, helping you to explore these ideas.
  • Development Journey: They will assist you in moving from the initial stages of improvisation and developing technique through to performance.

Enjoy the journey at the piano, whether you're alone or sharing the experience with others!
