Sight Reading Tips for Pianists

Hey guys, it's James here. I'm going to talk to you briefly about sight reading, which is a part of the Rock School exams and also a very important part of being a performing pianist.

The Importance of Sight Reading

• Pianists in the rock, pop, jazz, and funk worlds often don't have as strong sight reading skills as our classical counterparts.
• Although much of the music we play is aural-based, developing sight reading skills is crucial for:
  • Music theatre
  • Big band music
  • Session work

Having good sight reading skills can:

• Make rehearsals with bandmates smoother, especially with complicated music.
• Reduce the time spent figuring things out, allowing for more time to enjoy making music.

Personally, I came to sight reading quite late and struggled with it at a young age. Looking back, I wish I had developed those skills earlier; it would have made my musical journey much easier. Though it's possible to improve your sight reading at any age, starting younger leads to a more satisfying musical experience in the future.

Challenges of Piano Sight Reading

The most challenging aspect of piano sight reading is working with two staves. This makes it inherently harder than sight reading on other instruments because:

• We must consider not only two staves but also chords and different lines on each stave.
• The complexity involves contrary motion, counterpoint, and various other elements.

Important Tips for Improving Sight Reading

The trick, like all piano music, is to take it slow. Sight reading is an incremental process. Here's a formula I've developed, which I've summarized with the acronym CAT TRAP.

CAT TRAP Breakdown

1. C - Key

   • Determine the key (F, C, G major, G minor, E minor, etc.) by looking at the clef and key signature.
   • Accidental notes play a crucial role throughout the piece.

2. A - Articulation

   • Identify the phrasing: staccato lines, tenuto lines, or slurs.
   • These details can greatly impact how the music is performed.

3. T - Tempo

   • Note the speed of the piece (50 bpm vs. 120 bpm) and any specific tempo markings.
   • Understand how tempo affects your playing style across different genres.

4. T - Time Signature

   • Identify how many beats are in each bar.
   • Practice subdividing the beats to get a better grasp of complex time signatures.

5. R - Repeats

   • Look out for repeated sections.
   • Missing repeats can disrupt the flow of the entire piece.

6. A - Accidentals

   • Be mindful of any sharps or flats that are not part of the standard key signature.
   • They can significantly alter the melody, so make a quick note when you see them.

7. P - Patterns

   • Recognize shapes created by chords and notes rather than reading each note individually.
   • Familiarity with these patterns will enhance your sight reading efficiency.

Most importantly, remember: Don't panic. Every musician starts somewhere. Sight reading is a skill that takes time to develop but is incredibly useful for your career.

• Start with material that is only slightly more challenging than what you're comfortable with.
• Think of sight reading as lifting weights. Begin with a weight that allows you to grow without overwhelming yourself.
