Creative Applications of Common Rudiments

I thought I'd take this opportunity to show you some creative applications of common rudiments.

In the following piece, I'll be improvising against a melodic loop and just throwing in as many rudiments as I can from the different groups:

• Some rolls
• Some diddles
• Some flams
• Some stroke rolls

These are all the rudiments that you'll need to look at through your rock school grades.

Improvisation and Experimentation

Now, this is very unstructured. I'm just improvising. I'm really just having fun with the rudiments.

I'm doing different combinations of sounds and experimenting with different groove embellishments and fills.

Practice Routine

So, it's a practice routine. I strongly recommend that you study and practice rudiments as a great way to develop:

• Creative vocabulary on the drum kit
