Lesson transcript:
Hi, guys. Welcome to lesson two. This lesson is going to be about the Gazelle method and half valving.
So let's start with what the term "half valving" really means.
Here are both of those plates without the comb:
The term "half valving" means that we selectively put a valve over 10 of the possible 20 reed slots. There are 10 blow reeds and 10 draw reeds. As you can see on the blow reed plate, we have put a valve over the top four reed slots. On the draw reed plate, we have put a valve over the first six draw reed slots.
It doesn't have anything to do with covering half of the reed slot; it means we're putting a valve over 10 out of a possible 20 places we could put a valve on the harmonica.
Now, let's not think about valves for a minute and let's just go back and think about when we bend notes.
Here's why:
In between C and D, there is a half step available: D flat. That's why I'm able to do a draw bend on hole one. The physics of that say both reeds are vibrating, which helps produce the D flat tone on the draw note. We're bending, flatting or bending, the draw note.
Richter tuning at hole seven:
So that's the physics of why we can bend some notes and not others on the first six. Again, think about it in terms of the blow note being lower than the draw note on the first six holes. That's why when we draw bend those first six, if we're able to.
The pattern changes when we get to hole seven on Richter tuning. Now, the draw note is lower than the blow note.
Right there, we're going from draw to blow. So keeping that in mind, that's why we're able to do some blow bends at the top of the harmonica.
Again, the interval between the higher note and the lower note dictates how many semitone bends we can do.
These are known as double reed bends because both reeds are vibrating.
Now, here's where the magic happens.
It changes the tone slightly because both reeds are not vibrating. However, this is a doable thing that can happen, and that's the basis for half valving.
Let's rethink what I said:
If I put a valve on the draw reed slots of holes one through six, I can now do single reed bends of blow notes one through six.
Where the pattern on the Richter-tuned diatonic changes from blow-draw on holes one through six and then switches to draw-blow on holes seven through ten:
That's pretty cool because it opens up a whole other possibility of things you can do on the harmonica.
I think it's important to point out at this point that anything you can currently do on your Richter-tuned 10-hole diatonic, you can still do. The valves just give us some additional options:
Remember, a valve is an opening and a closing device. So it opens when you're actually playing that note and closes when you're not playing that note.
The Gazelle Method half-valved harmonica involves two things:
I've developed a valve that I think really works well for diatonics.
The other thing that the Gazelle Method employs is how the instrument is set up to best accommodate half-valve playing.
To sum up lesson two:
In the next lesson, we're going to talk about what that means and the advantages of it.
