Music Lesson: Exploring Hand Positions in A Minor
Introduction
In this lesson, we will explore different hand positions in A minor and practice singing and playing phrases based on these positions.
Hand Positions

First Hand Position:
- Notes: Da da da da da da da

Second Hand Position:
- Sing a phrase based on the notes.

Third Hand Position:
- Notes: Do badu da
- Sing a phrase and try to copy it on the piano.

Fourth Hand Position:
- Notes: Do badu da
- Make something up using those notes.

Final Hand Position:
- Spend time creating two-bar phrases using this shape.
Practice Tips
- The second sing and play track has a swing feel, featuring the same chords but with added sevenths.
- Experiment with an on/off rhythm to liven up the swing feel.
Playing Technique
- I will demonstrate the fret shapes up higher, but I'll sing them an octave lower for comfort.
- First hand position
- Next shape up
- Continue progressing through each position.
Variation Practice
- Aim to create two-bar patterns and spend time with each hand position.
- Think up as many different variations as you can!
- Don't worry about your singing voice or intonation; humming or whistling is perfectly acceptable.
Conclusion
- The goal is to hear phrases in your head and be able to find them on the keyboard.
- Eventually, try this exercise with a backing track.
- Remember, you have the option to play in either a swing feel or a straight feel.

- Experiment with left hand chords and keep them going.
- Feel free to play some on/off chords if you'd like.
