Lesson on Turnarounds
In this lesson, we're going to look at turnarounds.
What is a Turnaround?
A turnaround is a little section of a tune, normally at the end, in the last two bars, which has the function of sending you back to the beginning to start again or do a solo.
For instance, in a traditional blues, you've all heard phrases like this:
"That's a very basic turnaround."
It's often played in quite a cliched way. You've probably heard this kind of figuration as well.
Basic Function
So, it has different forms, but basically it takes you from the I to the V, and the V chord sends you back to the beginning of the 12-bar sequence.
Turnarounds in Jazz
Now, in jazz, that V chord is often approached in a slightly different way.
For instance, it might be:
- C
- A minor 7
- D minor 7
- G7
This is called a 1, 6, 2, 5 sequence. It's a really common type of turnaround.
Practical Application
If we play chords in the right hand, here's the bass line:
- C major
- A minor
- D minor
- G7
So, try playing this in time and just looping it so you get used to these changes which are coming at you quite fast.
Usage in Tunes
We'll be using this turnaround in several tunes, including the next tune, Leaping In. It's really, really common, not only in turnarounds.
Some tunes are based almost throughout on this 1625 sequence.
For example:
- I Can't Get Started
- Long Ago and Far Away
- Blue Moon
- Ain't Misbehaving
They all feature this 1625 sequence very heavily, right from the start in some cases.

Gemeinsam mit John Crawford ist er zudem Koautor von Exploring Latin Piano und Brazilian Piano Collection.

Als Interpret ist Tim seit den 1980er-Jahren eine feste Größe der britischen Jazzszene und spielte auch den Blues mit britischen und amerikanischen Legenden wie Otis Grand, Earl Green, Dana Gillespie, Larry Garner, Joe Louis Walker und Mojo Buford. Er hat über ein Dutzend Alben als Bandleader veröffentlicht (mit vielen der besten Londoner Jazzmusiker, darunter Pete King, Gilad Atzmon, Tony Kofi, Jason Yarde, Seb Rochford, Ed Jones, Dick Pearce und viele andere) und ist mit Besetzungen vom Duo bis zum Nonett durch ganz Europa getourt. Seine jüngste Aufnahme, das Album ‚Telegraph Hill‘ des sechsköpfigen Hextet, wurde im The Observer als "Eine wahre Freude von Anfang bis Ende" beschrieben.
