Sight Reading and Interpretation in Music Lessons

In grades one to five, you'll be required to choose between sight reading and interpretation/improvisation. You might ask the question:

Why Do I Need to Read?

Well, sight reading is a really important professional skill with many benefits. If you find yourself in a professional context where you receive a chart and have to read it, you need to be able to read, it's crucial. At Rock School, we ensure this is a key criterion of the examination package.

Tips for Sight Reading

The first thing I'm going to do is give you some tips for:

• Single Line Reading
• Composite Groove Reading

These will help with your interpretation and improvisation skills. I'll work through a few practice systems and offer as much advice as I can.

The Process of Sight Reading

The process of sight reading typically involves:

1. Looking at notes
2. Putting those notes together into phrases
3. Recognizing those phrases in a sight reading situation

Initially, as you work on these phrases, you'll need to piece them together very slowly. For example, listen to this 16th note phrase:

"1, 2, 3, 4."

When you first encounter that phrase, you need to determine:

• What it looks like
• Why it's written like that

Then, you can hear the sound as:

"One and a two and a three and a four and a one."

Building Automatic Responses

As you practice, aim for a natural, automatic response to the rhythm when reading. This process is similar to learning to string words together:

• When reading in a book or newspaper, you naturally read across the page.
• Similarly, when you read notation, you string the notes and phrases together just as you do with words.

Understanding Phrasing Systems

Every subdivisional note and pulse will have a phrasing system. For example, if I was working on eighth notes, let's say my tempo is:

"1 2, 3, 4."

There are several ways to break the eighth notes up:

• The downbeat (quarter note): 1, 2, 3, 4
• Half be: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4
• Two eighth notes: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4

These combinations create phrases.

Practicing Triplet Phrases

Now, if you're required to play triplet phrases, break these down into groups of notes:

"1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1."

We can subdivide these groups into different phrases.

Let's take just the first two triplets:

"1 triplet, 2 triplet, 3 triplet, 4 triplet, 1 triplet, 2 triplet, 3 triplet, 4 triplet."

Recognizing Note Values

Everything in sight reading is about recognition. Recognizing note values and phrases is essential for performing music.

Exploring 16th Note Phrases

For 16th note phrases, the more notes you have per beat, the more phrases you'll encounter during sight reading exercises. For instance, let's play four 16th notes at a tempo of:

"One, two, three, four."

You might break those 16th notes into various phrases, including:

• First, third, and fourth notes: 1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4
• Playing the last three 16th notes together.

Practice Requirements

The practice requirements are clear: you need to recognize how those notes look and how those rhythms sound. If you invest enough effort and practice into this, you'll become a better sight reader, both musically and professionally.

You can also explore 16th note triplets and 32nd notes as you advance through the higher grades. Focus on common phrases to enrich your understanding of note values and subdivisions.
