The use of dynamics is a vital component of expressive performances in many musical genres. Without variation in volume music can be boring and uninspiring, as well as tiring to listen to. In order to be heard at very high volumes, great rock and metal bands need to have dynamic 'light and shade' - to an audience member, loud will only seem loud if there is a degree of variation in volume.
