Music Lesson: Four Note Groups and Blues Chords
Let's sing these four note groups in turn and put the chords of the blues in C underneath. Don't worry about how long to spend on each chord to start with.
First Position
- Phrase:
Boo badu badu badu
Now make up a phrase:
Do badu biru
Boo doo boo doo boo
Second Shape
Now I'm going to go to the second shape and change to F.
- Phrase:
Do badoo badoo badoo
I'll make up a phrase back to C for the next position:
Do badu
Da da da da da da
Third Shape
I'm going to go to G for the next one up and finally back to C for the last one.
Practice
So once you've practiced those four shapes, singing and playing, try it with the replay track, the backing track. You'll get four bars on each chord.
Challenge
See if you can move up the five shapes like I demonstrated just now and play two-bar phrases with each one, alternating singing and playing.

As a performer Tim has been a presence on the UK jazz scene since the 1980s, also playing the blues with UK and US legends such as Otis Grand, Earl Green, Dana Gillespie, Larry Garner, Joe Louis Walker and Mojo Buford. He has released over a dozen albums as a leader (featuring many of London’s best jazz musicians including Pete King, Gilad Atzmon, Tony Kofi, Jason Yarde, Seb Rochford, Ed Jones, Dick Pearce and many others), and toured all over Europe with line-ups ranging from duo to nine-piece. His latest recording, the album ‘Telegraph Hill’ by the six-piece Hextet, was described in The Observer as "A true joy from beginning to end".
