Live Performance Techniques: Enhancing Your Beatboxing

Hey guys, welcome back! I know you've been practicing by yourselves, and now I'm going to teach you something you can use in a live scenario.

Understanding Microphone Dynamics

When you're doing a live performance, you're usually holding your microphone. Microphones tend to capture the wind coming out through your mouth in a really basic way.

For instance, when you have subwoofers in a club, a simple act of speaking into a mic can create a basic sound.

Creating a Unique Beat

A way to create a unique sound as part of your kick drum is to:

  1. Create your standard kick drum.
  2. Introduce lip oscillation ? it sounds like this:

You'd be surprised at the big bassy sound this can add to your beats!

Let's Try It Together

  1. Start with your kick drum.
  2. Push out to let your lips oscillate like this:

Exploring Lip Tension

An interesting factor is that depending on how tight you keep your lips, you can create a different tone:

  • Loose Lips: For a deep and beigey tone, keep your lips quite loose.

    • You're only blowing out a very little bit of air at a time.
  • Tight Lips: If you expel more air quickly and keep your lips tight, you'll create a much higher tone, which sounds like this:

Listen to the Difference

  • Low Tone
  • High Tone

It's really cool to incorporate both tones in different beats and at different times during your beatbox routine. This keeps your audience guessing what's going to happen next!

Final Practice

Let's try it together:

  1. Low Tone: Start with a bit of air being expelled slowly.

    [Demonstrate low sound]

  2. High Tone: Now, transition to your higher tone.

    [Demonstrate high sound]

It might look a bit funny, but when your mouth's covered during a beatbox performance, I assure you it's one of the coolest sounds you can use!

Here's a Little Example:
