Music Lesson: Exploring Six Chords in the Key of G
In this lesson, we're going to focus on six chords, this time in the key of G. We'll also look at two-bar patterns in the bass line for the left hand.
Bass Line Technique
- Root, 3, 5, 6 Bass Line in G:
- Instead of repeating it in Bar 2, we can cross over to the top. This means playing the root note at the top, and then going back down.
- This outlines a G6 chord.
"Just get used to crossing over with the index finger over the thumb for the top note."
Transition to Other Chords

Moving to C:
- We'll need to remember the crossover technique.

Switching to D:
- The progression will be D, C, G, one bar each.
- We won't have enough time to execute the two-bar pattern here.
Right Hand Technique
- Focusing on First Inversion:
- We will use the first inversion shape, with the thumb on the third of the chord.
- It's essential to know these shapes.
Practice Routine
In G, I'll demonstrate the routine mentioned earlier in the previous clip. If you've practiced the exercises in G, C, and D, you'll have no trouble finding the first inversion shape with your thumb on the third.
- Instead of playing like we did during the shuffle, feel free to practice that in the new key.
- This time, we'll focus on using the right hand more melodically.
