Music Lesson: Blues Piano Improvisation
So if you look at those shapes again, we're not moving at all. The notes that we're using are all under the fingers.
In fact, that's a five-finger position of its own:
- Thumb on E
- Little finger on E
By having our hand in that position, we can play all three chords without moving or even needing to look.
Performance
I'll play the whole thing now, and when I've finished the accompaniment, I'll take a short solo using the triads with the blue third idea.
Practice Suggestions
- Why don't you use that track where I'm playing the backing?
- A comping figure.
- Use that to play along!
You can:
- Play your right hand only if you wish
- Improvise some phrases
- Improvise a solo
Of course, you can also just play along with the notes exactly as given.
Important Note
But don't forget that improvisation is a really important part of playing blues piano.

He has released over a dozen albums as a leader (featuring many of London’s best jazz musicians including Pete King, Gilad Atzmon, Tony Kofi, Jason Yarde, Seb Rochford, Ed Jones, Dick Pearce and many others), and toured all over Europe with line-ups ranging from duo to nine-piece. His latest recording, the album ‘Telegraph Hill’ by the six-piece Hextet, was described in The Observer as "A true joy from beginning to end".
